Quilting cotton, cotton lawn, chambray, light linen — anything woven, light and washable. Scraps, fat quarters, precut squares and strip offcuts all work, since every piece is small.
Prewash everything before you cut: patchwork made of prints that shrink at different rates will pull out of shape the first time it's washed.
