It's a good first bag. Straight seams, a patch pocket, a simple gusset and a flap. No zips, no hardware to source, nothing that needs a special foot.
Sew it in linen, cotton canvas, denim or twill, and line it in quilting cotton. A fusible interfacing is worth adding — it's what keeps the bag standing up once there's a notebook inside.
